"What I want? Man, I wish I could have adventures, you know? Be able to do flashy things with a sword, swing from a chandelier, and that sort of stuff! I'd practice until I was the best and could do lots of stuff." He rubbed his chin, considering matters, then went on, "Of course, it's no fun trying to do it alone. I'd want to have lots of people to have fun with."

He grinned, "And, at the end of the day, I'd want to have gold and maybe a jewel or two at hand… Yeah, those would be the days."

Training & Mentor

?

Ray's mentor was one half master thief, one half, dashing rogue, and one half someone so -damn- charming that you'd hardly mind when he expertly backstabbed you or seduced away your wife. A man of a dozen faces, a hundred loves, and a thousand names. He took Ray on a near non-stop adventure, forcing his new 'sidekick' to learn things now or be left behind in increasingly dangerous or embaressing circumstances.

"You don't want to know half the holes he's led me into, explaining it 'was for tonight's lesson'."

But it's hard to stay mad at someone so cheerful, charismatic, and just so much fun. The guy had a very polished silver tongue.

He does give a little more formal instruction, but it was always on the move or in a more… interesting situation. If you couldn't take it in then that's just one more thing that you'd have to learn the hard way. But, staying with him for a while, you got an impression of just what he was really like.

He was still the sort of guy you could talk to for hours, tell everything to, and loan money even when he never pays it back… but there was something missing. He did seem to be all surface or machavelian plots, no soul deep inside. He could be someones best friend who they only just met, or meet someone who had known him for years, and he'd happily slit their throat if he decided it was for the best.

For his best.

The longer you were around him the more worrying this became. Especially as you still couldn't help but trust him…

Even knowing some of his tricks hardly helped when he put his mind to it. He was a roving guy, a man of many talents, and (when you stopped to think back) a one man curse upon many people. And unless you wanted to be left discarded in his wake…

Keep up. Keep up or you'll fall behind… He laughed as he said that to you.

In terms of being person he is a little lacking: Mad skills, yes. A competent teacher, sorta. A good person… Let's not think about that too much.

To put it in more modern terms think about a pure, but -very- smart, sociopath. He enjoys things but everyone else is an object. An object he might have to fool or manipulate, but just an object which talks, thinks, and talks. An actual lack of a soul might be the cause of this, but you're not sure of that. To him the world is his playground, and everyone's just a plaything to toy with till he's either bored, or annoying.

His payment was simply to be let in on the watching of the party. He finds it hillarious and a great way to fill odd moments when he's alone on the road. Every so often, when he thinks they're not being entertaining enough and if he happens to be nearby, he'd arrange something to make you do something interesting.

Contract

There are three primary compulsions, but leeway is normally allowed when following them. The more that one is followed the more leeway there is having to follow the other two. Conversely, trying to ignore one compulsion tightens the enforcement of the other two.

  • "practice until I was the best and could do lots of stuff"
    • Practice and improve in her skills. Specifically sexual ones, but sufficient practice in another skill can make do to a lesser extent.
  • "have lots of people to have fun with"
    • Acquire a new, or spend time with a recently new, sexual partner. A very large and enjoyable party can also fulfil this compulsion.
  • "want to have gold and maybe a jewel or two at hand"
    • Wear suitably revealing outfits. Somehow removing the piercings continual breeches the compulsion until they are restored.

"It's just… I don't want to be the scrivener's girl for the rest of my life, you know?" She plays with her hair, a little nervous at how easily this old fellow's plying her for her deepest wishes. "I mean, there's all the stories about mages and how they have all that knowledge and a big staff 'o power… and that… I wish I could be like that. Power and adventurin' and seeing all sorts of new folk… doing all kinda things that'd make that Kally Highton down the road so red in the face when I come back, y'know?"

Training & Mentor

?

Her mentor was tempted and bribed into playing that role by two things. He's not an old man, perhaps a little past his middle age, but he had fought hard and almost continuously from his departure from -his- apprenticeship as a prodigy until he forced himself to retire. He was a war wizard, shaping flame to obliterate his foes, hem them in, and leave them no escape.

The nightmares which Elaine is aware of are the tip of the iceberg. He actually killed most of the people in a camp with him during a previous one and so retired and retrated, becoming almost a recluse whom people were scared to go close to.

He was offered companionship in the form of an apprentice who wouldn't run away from him and the recipe for a potion which (with no real ill effects) would let him sleep with far fewer nightmares. Said apprentice being Elaine.

Some have described him as being 'ike jerky made into a man, wiry and leathery and tough'. In other words, a not so grizzled veteran

Not a nasty guy, but he expects hard work and has a few abrasive edges. And it isn't as though he'd admit that he wants to see how his apprentice is getting on…

Constance

stuff about warlord

Request

"Look, I'm not much to look at but I know my numbers and I'm well read. I want the chance to see the world, do things like in the stories, and to not have the girls laugh at me any more… Well, unless I'm saying something funny? Heck, I want to have the chance to make friends wherever I go and to have folks listen to what I say."

Training & Mentor

?

In contrast to the rogue's mentor, the 'Sir' who taught Constance was a rather more honest gentleman. He had manners when he wished to use them and, normally, was a somewhat firm hand on his new student. He taught her history, he taught her tactics, he taught her to fight, and he taught her how to -inspire-. Not to persuade or to trick, but entertain or to kindle what was there into a far greater conflagration.

However there was a degree of distance here. He watched her carefully, dosed her with 'herbal mixes' when he felt it nessisary, and micromanaged her successes. He rarely gave praise but, when he did, a few simple words could make her heart swell.

He made her want to make him proud then subtly guided her into working hard for that simple reason alone. He made her put up with the pain, the fatigue, the effort and occasionally the humilation required to improve. And just when she might have faltered he said just the right thing before making it harder yet.

He had no qualms at all about using that idealism and vague hero worship of hers…

Of course, he was a pragmatic man at heart. His payment wouldn't be mentioned but it was simple: cancellation of a favour owed, an 'apprentice price', and the promise that if you didn't make it they'd find him another (better) apprentice.

He does have an interest in her, but it's more the pride of a gardener for his unexpectedly flourishing rosebush.

    • Regularly the compulsion will fixate on an individual girl to seduce.
